Window In Time Quilt Pattern

Pillows are some of the most versatile and fun things to sew. As a first time home owner many moons ago, I taught myself to sew pillows to fill my home with handmade goodness. Back then I sewed easy pillow covers with just two big squares of fabric, but now I have way more fun by cutting fabric into little pieces, and sewing them back together to make a quilted pillow! After you make one you’ll be hooked, and will move on to making lap quilts, bed size quilts, and more pillows!

For this months pillow I was inspired by the yellow, orange, and green Composition Notebook fabrics from the Teacher’s Pet fabric collection by Krissy Mast, and all those cute dog fabrics were begging to be fussy cut. Fussy cutting is strategically cutting your fabric so that a specific portion of the fabric print will show in your finished quilt block. It’s fun and addicting!

I mean come on, look at those cute fabrics!

About the Quilt Block

I love to sew with novelty fabrics, and they are often larger in scale, and directional. Directional fabric, sometimes referred to as a “one-way” print, when there is a clear up or down to the pattern on the fabric, like the pencils and dog fabric shown above.

Some quilters find them difficult to work with, but I see them as a fun challenge!

A favorite resource I use for quilt design inspiration is this book 1000 Great Quilt Blocks by Maggi McCormick Gordon. You can see by all my post it flags, that it’s a well loved book in my library.

The block I chose for this pillow is very similar to the Bright Hopes block #9 from the book.

But this block in the pillow is a bit different (more simple) in that it starts with a square in the middle, you sew two rectangles on the sides, then two on the top. It doesn’t get much simpler than that. But I did find a way, to take a thousand photos to show you exactly how I do that.
