Maple Leaf Quilt Block Mug Rug

I’m diving into all the creative ways to incorporate the classic Maple Leaf Block in my projects. So far, I’ve made a wall hanging, a pillow, and this adorable mug rug. The Maple Leaf Block is fun to sew. It’s also a fantastic way to practice making and trimming half square triangles. Let me walk you through the process of creating this block. Grab some fabric scraps, and let’s get sewing!

Maple Leaf Mug Rug Instructions

Finished Size: 8″ x 8″

Materials

  • 4 1/2” x 12” colored fabric for the maple leaf
  • 5 1/2” x 16” background fabric
  • 10” x 10” for the backing
  • 2 1/2” x 42” binding
  • (2) 10″ squares of 100% cotton batting (double layered for use with hot bowls and mugs)

Cutting List

All measurements include 1/4” -wide seam allowances.

  • From the background fabric for the leaf, cut:
    • A – (2) 3″ x 3″ squares
    • B – (1) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ square
    • C – (1) 2 3/4″ x 2 3/4″ square
    • D – (2) 1 1/4” x 6 1/2” rectangles
    • E – (2) 1 1/4” x 8” rectangles
  • From the maple leaf fabric, cut:
    • F – (2) 3″ x 3″ squares
    • G- (1) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles
    • H – (1) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares
    • I – (1) 1″ x 4″ rectangle
  • From the backing fabric, cut (1) 12” x 12” square
  • From the binding fabric, cut (1) 2 1/2” x 42” strip

Sewing Instructions

HST = Half Square Triangle

  1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of (2) A – squares.
  2. Place (2) A – squares with (2) F – squares, right sides together. Sew 1/4″ away from both sides of the drawn diagonal lines. Cut along the drawn diagonal lines, making (4) A/F HST units. Press toward background fabric F. Trim HST units to measure 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ unfinished.
  1. Cut C – square in half on the diagonal. Place C – triangle onto I – rectangle , right sides together as shown. Sew the pieces together and press toward background fabric. Then, place the other C – triangle on the opposite side of the I – rectangle. Make sure the right sides are together as shown. Sew the pieces together and press toward background fabric. Trim stem unit to measure 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ unfinished.
  1. Arrange (4) A/F – HST units, (1) B – square, (1) C/I – stem unit, (1) G – rectangle, and (1) H – square as shown. Sew the pieces together and press in the direction of the arrows. The block should measure 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ unfinished.
  1. Arrange (2) 2 D rectangles and (2) E – rectangles as shown. Sew the pieces together and press in the direction of the arrows. The maple leaf block should measure 8” x 8” unfinished.

Finishing the mug rug

Finish the mug rug by layering the maple leaf block, batting, and backing. Baste layers together and quilt as desired. Bind with binding strips.
