Pumpkin Patch Pillow

I’m having so much fun sewing pumpkins over here, I think I’ll keep at it all month and make a pumpkin quilt too. For now though, I’m happy to have a wheelbarrow full of these cute pillows scattered about my house. The best part about these pumpkins is they’re way less messy to carve, and they last forever!

We love going to the pumpkin patch, it’s a family tradition to head to a local farm, and pick out the perfect pumpkin to bring home and carve. I love the crisp, cool air, and all the colors of fall.

Our pumpkin carvings make me smile! You never know just how silly they’ll look until you light them up, then their cute characters shine!

I don’t decorate my home with many spooky decorations, I like all the cute sayings like Happy Fall, and Happy Fall Y’all, and pumpkins of every kind, handmade ceramic pumpkins from the ol pinch pot days of elementary school, the chalk art pumpkins from art class, the fabric covered pumpkins, wooden sign pumpkins, I think you get my point.

This Pumpkin Patchwork Pillow is reminiscent of a crisp fall day at the pumpkin patch.

I have a quick tip to share about sewing with directional fabric like the cute daisy print in the pillow above. To construct the pillow I used the strip piecing technique. Typically you would sew the long strip together, then sub-cut it into the widths you need as shown below. Then rotate every other unit to get the checkerboard effect. But if you do that with directional fabric, that cute daisy fabric would be turned upside down.

Well to keep those cute daisies from smiling upside down and looking frowny, I cut the 37″ strips into 22″, and 15″ lengths, and sewed them together as shown below.

I sewed the 22″ strips with the dark orange daisy print on the top, and for the 15″ strips, I sewed the dark orange daisy print on the bottom. This way they all came together right side up. A simple technique to keep your patchwork all in order. Give it a try!

Here are a few more pillows in my pumpkin patch. This one looks like it’s sitting in a pumpkin patch under a starry night sky!

And now I’ve been seeing lots of cool green pumpkins at the patch too, so I had to make a green pumpkin too.

I’ll keep sharing my cute pumpkin blocks all month long over on my Instagram page, so come follow me over there. And grab the pattern so you can make a pumpkin pillow too! Tag me in your pillows so I can see them, with @tangledthreadsbyjen #tangledthreadsbyjen.

Happy fall, and pumpkin patchin!
